Intraocular Lens Testing
An intraocular lens (IOL) involves the insertion of a small lens into the eye, usually replacing the existing crystalline lens because it has been clouded over by a cataract, or as a form of refractive surgery to change the eye's optical power . It is anchored in front of the crystalline lens behind the pupil of the eye, and functions much like a traditional contact lens except that it is left in the eye indefinitely and cannot be seen or felt by the patient.
This method allows the eye to continue focusing naturally while safely adjusting the patient's refractive error to provide excellent image quality and can be removed at any time, providing a totally reversible procedure.
The challenges of performing this test:
- Accurately measuring small loads and displacements
- Testing in vitro
- Limited specimens
- Accurately measuring small loads and displacements – Instron® recommends the use of a 5942 Series frame equipped with a 2530-5N load cell, providing accurate measurement down to 1/250th of its capacity, or 0.02 N.
- Testing in vitro – The BioPuls™ Bath enables operators to test their specimens in a water or saline filled bath up to 40°C to simulate conditions inside the body.
- Limited specimens – When the quantity of specimens are limited for testing, it is critical to have records of how it behaved during the test. Bluehill® Universal equipped with the TestCam module enables users to record and playback video of the test and correlate it to the test curve.
The BioPuls submersible pneumatic side action grips and temperature-controlled bath with pneumatic lifting and lowering mechanism is the ideal testing solution for a wide variety of biomedical testing applications.
